Welcome to my basement Maker's Space classroom! I am trying something new to help communicate with parents who might be interested in knowing the morning message that I send to my students via Google Classroom. Therefore, I will attach the video here each day. Hopefully it helps. Be safe and be well.

Just before the Thanksgiving break, my students presented their projects regarding their research on the origins of modern humans in Africa along with the early migration of these early humans FROM Africa. By identifying key sites across the globe, students uncovered evidence that helped explain the migration story of our early ancestors. Additionally, learning about the research that went into the discoveries, led students to appreciate the work of experts in their respected fields of study. By also exploring various places in Africa where new evidence was discovered, students learned that theories can always be challenged when new evidence presents itself. Therefore, I think it is crucial for students to not only seek out the experts, albeit researchers, websites, or other trusted source material, but to appreciate the work that these field experts do for a living. By doing so, it helps kids understand that science, when supported with evidence, is crucial to our understanding of the world. Let's push kids to seek out experts and rely on them for teaching us about the world around us. Today, students received their interim reports for term one. I have always found it challenging to assess the learning habits of students after only six weeks of school. As sixth graders, middle school is new and it takes the month of September for them to feel comfortable with the routine, classroom expectations, and curriculum demands. I feel as though we are just getting into the groove of learning. I sent an email out to all my students explaining the meaning behind the numbers and letters that they received. As parents, you may also want to read this email.
Good Afternoon Class, You recently received an interim report for social studies. You may be wondering why all the 2s. A 2 simply means, "working towards standard." If you recall, I mentioned to you in class that the 2s represent the fact that you were just introduced to the process of researching a topic, analyzing evidence for understanding, and applying the content that you learn. Since we started Topic 2, I have provided you with the research material, the set-up of the graphic organizer, and the meaning of how it all fits with a topic. As the school year moves on, you will be asked to become more independent in these areas. In order to meet the standard, you will be asked to take on more independence as a writer, thinker, and presenter. It will happen. I know it will. As for the learning skills, each was assessed on observations made so far this school year. If you have questions as to how each skill applies to class, click HERE to access the document that identifies how each individual learning skills is assessed. Remember, this is just an interim report. The goal of any report is to showcase your strengths and identify areas to work on. Please see me on Monday if you want more clarification. Thank you all. I am honored to be your teacher. -- Yours Truly, Mr. Michael Gow Sixth Grade World Geography and Cultures 1 teacher I love the idea of the Interactive Notebook as a means for self expression. The notebook provides a gateway for students to not only show what they learn, but display their talents as well. One particular student, Emma, has taken it upon herself to create her own images for the notebook rather than use my templates. Emma goes beyond what is expected, taking the time to craft artistic renditions of people. I am thrilled that I have provided an avenue for her to express.
For this past week, students have worked to complete different thematic maps. Each map was then cut and pasted into the student interactive notebooks. Afterwards, students added a variety of facts regarding deserts, continents, and eventually rivers and mountains. These notebooks are a excellent way to house material related to our learning as well as revisit past lessons to make connections to current learning. So thrilled to have introduced them to my students! Although the opening days of school are behind us, the feel that one gets at the start of school is still among us. Students need directions to find classrooms, the bathroom, etc... Classroom norms are still being set while students are still figuring out the boundaries that they can push. All of it is appropriate and all of it is OK. I have so enjoyed the moments that I have spent getting to know students as individuals and as learners. This early journey will soon pass but new adventures and challenges await. As an intricate part of the classroom setting, students should be able to share their thoughts and comments regarding the topics that we learn. Therefore, share some thoughts about yourself.
Questions/statements to think about: 1. Why I will miss summer? 2. What do hope to gain from my sixth grade school year? 3. Where do I see myself in 10 years? 4. Pizza or burgers? Which is preferred and why? 5. If I suddenly were given super human powers, I would want... 6. My dog/cat is the best thing in the world because... 7. My favorite hobby is to... Just add a comment to tell me more about who you are. Remember to add your fist name and last initial so I know who you are. As the summer winds down and thoughts of school creep into our minds, I wish to welcome all you to a brand new experience. Although school is nothing new to you, MIDDLE school is. Middle school is something that I have taught for a long time. In fact, this will be my 23rd year in education, 21st year teaching, and 20th year teaching sixth grade. In other words, I understand the fear, anxiety, anticipation, and for some, sleepless nights as we begin to think about the school year ahead. As the journey of summer comes to a close, I posted here a picture of my family. Like you, the start of school is a transition point between the time spent with family and the time spent in school. Like you, I to will miss summer and the wonderful experiences I shared with family and friends. Therefore, let's journey this journey together to make the transition as smooth as possible. I CAN'T WAIT to meet you all once more. Until then, savor every last drop of summer vacation. See you all next week. Your Humble Teacher, Mr. Gow |
